Prof. Helen Whelton is Head of the College of Medicine & Health at University College Cork and Chief Academic Officer to the South and South-West Hospital Group. She was previously Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Leeds.

Her talk explores why oral health matters throughout life and why the mouth shouldn't be considered separately from the rest of the body. It highlights the global burden of oral disease and the substantial treatment costs and productivity losses associated with poor oral health, covering conditions such as dental decay, gum disease, oral cancer, dry mouth, recession, root caries and tooth sensitivity — and the growing evidence linking periodontal inflammation with diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disease.

The emphasis is strongly practical: diet, fluoride, effective plaque removal, smoking and alcohol, the effects of medicines, regular dental care and preserving natural teeth for life. Her central message: oral disease is common, costly and largely preventable, and a healthy mouth supports overall health, wellbeing and healthy ageing.

Prof. John Cryan is Professor & Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in UCC's School of Medicine, and was appointed Vice President for Research & Innovation in March 2021.

His talk looks at how the microbes living in our gut, and the food we eat, can shape our mood, memory and mental health at every stage of life.

Dr Chris Luke is a retired Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Cork University Hospital. An emergency physician for over 35 years, he became known for his frequent and lively media warnings on issues ranging from emergency-department overcrowding to addiction. He worked in frontline medicine in Ireland, the UK and Australia, and was a consultant in emergency medicine in Cork for over 20 years.

After 14 years leading humanitarian operations across Africa and Asia through war, drought, floods and earthquakes, Calodagh McCumiskey learned what high-stakes pressure does to people, teams and decision-making — and came to understand that how people feel is how they perform.

Today she brings that experience into organisations as a wellbeing and leadership specialist, meditation teacher and life coach, with over 13 years' experience helping individuals and organisations thrive.

Sinéad O'Flynn is a Nurse and Nutritional Practitioner with over 25 years' experience working across Ireland, the UK and internationally in healthcare, clinical management and health promotion.

In this practical and engaging talk, Sinéad explores why many people continue to struggle with fatigue, stress, low energy, weight changes and ongoing health concerns despite trying to live well. Drawing on her nursing background and her later work in microbiome research at UCC — which led her to study Nutritional Therapy and nutrigenomics — she discusses biological individuality: the fact that we don't all respond in exactly the same way to the same food, exercise, stress or environment.

Genetics, she explains, is only one piece of a much larger picture that also includes diet, microbiome, sleep, stress, hormones, medications, environment, age and lifestyle. Health and disease aren't simply two distinct states — changes such as fatigue, altered sleep, digestive changes or reduced resilience to stress can be useful early signals worth paying attention to, without meaning every symptom is a warning sign or that personalised health replaces conventional medicine.

Her message: prevention doesn't need to mean doing everything perfectly. The foundations remain simple — nourishing ourselves well, moving regularly, protecting sleep and recovery, recognising persistent changes, and seeking appropriate healthcare when needed. Personalisation builds on those foundations by recognising that the same approach won't necessarily suit everyone the same way. Ultimately, prevention isn't about doing more — it's about understanding what matters for you, sooner.

Christopher Nial is a Senior Partner at FINN Partners, where he leads the Health Policy & Impact group within the firm's Global Health Practice. His remit is global, with a particular focus on EMEA. He has more than 30 years' experience in communications, working with life science companies, foundations, multilaterals and economic research institutes. His strategy, thought leadership and content work centres on three themes: health policy, health equity and health as an investment. A journalist and member of the NUJ/IFJ and the Association of Health Care Journalists, he has written for Medika Life, Health Policy Watch and illuminem.

In District 1160 (Rotary in Ireland), he is Public Image Chair and PolioPlus Chair, and a member of the Rotary Hub of Ireland's direct membership team. He leads the district's communications, working to provide clubs with the website, training and resources they need to tell their own stories well, and has helped shape a public image strategy for the district.

His Rotary work is closely tied to his professional interest in global health: he supports the fight against polio and malaria initiatives, and remains involved in leadership development forums (the GB&I SAT Public Image team) across Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland.
