OMAGH, Thursday 9 July 2026 — The Rotary Club of Omagh has welcomed George Roche, the new District Governor for Rotary Ireland, on one of his first club visits since beginning his 2026/27 term.
Mr Roche, who is based in Cork, chose Omagh as an early stop on his district tour. Addressing members, he praised the club’s community service and encouraged volunteers across District 1160 — the only Rotary district that spans the whole island of Ireland — to keep building projects that support wellbeing and strengthen local communities.
The new president takes the chain of office
The evening also marked a change of leadership at the club. Nick Smith has taken over as President from Ronald Oldcroft, receiving the chain of office at the meeting. Mr Smith set out his plans for the year ahead, with a programme centred on personal health and wellbeing and a series of charity events to benefit people in Omagh and neighbouring areas.
“Rotary changes lives through practical service, not grand statements. What I saw in Omagh — a club ready to work alongside others in the town — is exactly the spirit that carries the district forward.”

Members also confirmed two changes among club officers. Mona Allen becomes Honorary Secretary, succeeding David Killen, while Julia Ellis takes over as Treasurer from Michael MacCrossan. Both were thanked for stepping into their new roles and for their predecessors’ service.
“Our focus this year is health and wellbeing, close to home. If we can support a few more families and raise money for causes that matter in Omagh, that’s a year well spent.”

Working with other groups in Omagh
Looking ahead, the club says it is keen to partner with other volunteer groups and charities in the town, building collaborations that widen its community impact. As one of 65 clubs across District 1160, Omagh forms part of a network of nearly 1,400 Rotarians on the island of Ireland.
